This here is an amazing item. A cookbook compiled by the wives of the ’84 Padres called Padre Pickin’s with all the proceeds going to the Child Protection Program at Children’s Hospital San Diego. Yeah the recipes are cool and all but the thing that makes this “amazing” are all the pictures inside. Each player has a picture of himself with his family. Highlights include Tony Gwynn w/Little Anthony, Nate Colberts hairdo, Jerry Coleman with his wife and 2 dogs (is 1 of them the famous Gus??), Alan Wiggins wife’s Rick James hairdo, Trainer Dick Dents son wearing a Houston Astros hat, Tim Flannery’s recipe of BBQ sauce (possible rip off of Randy Jones??) & last but not least Steve Garvey being the only player to pose for a picture by himself. Yes the Garv decided he wanted nothing to do with wives, girlfriends, kids or even dogs. He wanted the entire focus on only himself. Another interesting thing to mention is there is a “Parents Prayer” in the front of the book and a “Cookbook Prayer” in the back. That’s something you won’t see now-a-days.

PS-I thought this picture would go perfect with the new “BREAKFAST TOWN USA” kick the Padres are currently on. Just switch the hamburger patty with a pancake and there you have the new Padres logo going forward. There you go Mr. Garfinkel that idea is free for you to use.

When I first started this site I kept thinking to myself “OK let’s not flood people with to much Gwynn stuff even though I have tons of it. I’ll throw a thing in here and there but this site will be mainly about PADRES stuff and not just GWYNN stuff.” But as I sit back looking at the previous posts I realized that Mr. Padre himself is straight up being neglected here. This here website that is named in his honor (.400 in ’94 is what SHOULD have happened) has only posted a unflattering figurine & his final game ticket and that’s it. So with that I am going to go on a Tony Gwynn binge where I will be posting a new thing everyday for the next week. Starting with these “Cover Classics” which were placed in Sunday San Diego Union Tribune newspapers at 7-11′s in San Diego around the time he was to be inducted in the Hall of Fame. There was 1 a week for 3 weeks and each one is an exact mini replica of classic Gwynn moments in the newspaper. If I recall correctly there was a “golden ticket” placed randomly in 1 newspaper that earned the winner a trip to Cooperstown that I unfortunately didn’t get. The first one shows the front Sports Page when he collected his 3,000th hit (8/7/99) and it’s titled “Classic T. Shot”. The second one shows the cover of a special insert when he retired (10/7/01) and is titled “Forever, A Hit”. And lastly the third one shows the cover of another special insert from when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame (1/10/07) titled “The Masterstroke”. They had a website up (www.UTCoverClassics.com) where you could go and view the full stories but that website has been taken down.

Here’s kind of a weird one. A bat boy uniform from the 1940′s PCL Padres. Looks like it’s in great condition and all but unless you WERE the bat boy this seems a bit strange to want to own. Maybe if you were the Padres or Hall of Champions it might be cool to display but if you’re just some normal Joe Schmo collector like myself it would probably creep people out to see you are collecting little kids uniforms. It’s currently up to 51 bucks on the bidding and was apparently acquired at an estate sale in San Diego.

As I was browsing eBay today I came across this gem. Now if only I had 250 bucks just lying around! It is a KGB Chicken “Cluck”….as in Clock. The seller says it has a 1977 copyright on it and runs perfectly on a AA battery. Apparently he’s been trying to sell it on eBay for quite some time since there were declined offers going all the way back to March 13th of this year.

This is a record from Miller Lite titled “A Dedicated Season”. Not sure if this was a stadium giveaway or not but it has a date of 1985 on the back plus it has the “new” 1985 Padres logo so my guess is it was sold/given away during the 1985 season. It’s still wrapped so I have never had the chance to play it but I believe it’s just a “highlight” reel of the 1984 season since it says that Jerry Coleman is the narrator & that the highlights were compliments of 76 KFMB, Jerry Coleman, Dave Cambell, Bob Chandler & Ted Leitner. There is writing credits for 1 song titled “Talkin’ Number One” and it is written and performed by Steve Vaus. If anyone recalls Vaus and Glenn Erath would occasionally come into the KFMB studios with Hudson and Bauer and perform some songs about the Padres or Chargers. I obviously don’t remember the radio that far back since I was to young but I remember during the 96-98 Padre teams with songs like “Hey Caminiti” (sung to the style of the Macarena). On a side note I actually did some work for Glenn Erath. Nice guy and very talented musician. He does almost all the commercial jingles on 1090 currently (Does 1-800-901-1102 Corky’s ring a bell?).
