Sticking with 90′s throwback days here I thought I’d post this gem. Attention Mr. Garfinkel. This is called a Compadres Club Card. It was FREE for anyone who signed up for it at Padre games. It started around 1996 and was FREE. People would show up to games and swipe their FREE card and earn points for each game they attended. Those points in turn would give the fans awesome FREE prizes. This current Frequent Friar BS is lame. 10 bucks per person (so lets say a family of 4 wants to “purchase” a card for each of them that’s 40 bucks out the door). Then points are given out for every dollar spent at the ticket office. Therefore all the games in which you either win tickets, are given tickets by friends/family or buy off of sites like Craigslist, StubHub or eBay you won’t get points for. Now I wouldn’t be opposed to forking over some money if the prizes were good, but really??? Do I want to spend 100 bucks to get a voucher for 50% tickets for one game? Or do I want to spend 300 bucks so I can get 1 pound of coffee? Ohhh here’s another good one!! What about spending 750 bucks and getting….wait for it….half off my meal at Lolitas at the Park! Horrible prizes. Just horrible. I’m telling you, 9 fans out of 10 would love to have this promotion back and running the way it used to be.

So I noticed on my stats page that I go from about 50+ viewers a day M-F to around 10 for the whole weekend. So for the small handful of people that will see this today I’m going to amaze you with this item. A hat. Blows your mind doesn’t it? I figured in keeping with the ’90′s flashback theme I’d complete the uni by showing the hat that they wore from 1991-2003.

Yes I have all 3 ’90′s Padre jerseys (among many others). Yes I know I have a problem and need to stop buying all this stuff. Yes I know it’s weird that I keep typing like I’m having a conversation with somebody. This jersey here was one of the go to jerseys for the Padres during this time. It seemed like I saw them in this uni more than the other 2 so it sticks out more to me as the jersey of the ’90′s. I’m not 100% sure on when they started using these so I searched the internet looking for pictures as well as looking at some old baseball cards. It appears that they first started using these in 1996 though.
PS-Upon further review the ugly Dodger-esque white unis were worn as far back as 1999. I didn’t realize they wore them for that long.

What the heck let’s have 90′s throwback days here at .400 in ’94. This is the Away jersey used from ’91-’03. Unlike that horrible plain white home jersey they switched to in 2002, they kept these away jerseys for the final 2 years at Qualcomm Stadium. I kind of liked the Home & Alternate jerseys but this one I never really loved…they were OK though.

The Padres wore this jersey at home from 1991-2001 and then made the switch to possibly the worst uniforms they have ever worn, but let’s not talk about those. This jersey brings back fond memories for me, being the jersey worn during the ’96 & ’98 playoff runs. Although it also brings up bad memories of the Tom Werner fire sale as well……but I think the good outweighs the bad.

I figured I might as well show off the other amazing bobblehead that was given away in 2003. Like the Winfield one the Randy Jones one was given away with him in both the Home & Away uniforms and once again the Away ones were difficult to find. I have to admit that the Winfield Away jersey was bought on ebay but I actually received the Away Randy Jones one when I walked in. I wanted to shout from a mountain “I HAVE A RANDY JONES AWAY JERSEY BOBBLEHEAD!!!” But alas I did not have a mountain and I technically didn’t yell that at that at the top of my lungs but it was still pretty damn cool. The game went down like this….Adam Eaton didn’t pitch well, Luther Hackman didn’t pitch well, Jesse Orosco didn’t pitch well and yet the Padres came from behind in the 8th inning to pull out the win over the Diamondbacks 8-7 thanks to a Lou Merloni sacrafice fly to score Gary Bennett. Wow I can’t believe I actually typed the names Lou Merloni & Gary Bennett on this blog. I feel dirty now.

This is another one of those cool stadium give aways from 2003 that I was referring to in the Tony Gwynn Babooshkah Russian Nesting Dolls & Qualcomm Stadium Commemorative Ticket Holder posts. Current Padres front office take note of these things…..they are the things people love to be given. Despite the team going 64-98 on the season crowds of 60,998, 36,745 & 29,725 showed up for these 3 giveaways (all 3 of those totals would easily crack the top 15 home game attendance turnouts this season). These Dave Winfield bobbleheads were given away at a game vs the Phillies in which the Padres lost 5-4 in 10 innings. Here’s the kicker on these…..the home uniform was the one that was advertised as being given away yet unbeknownst to us fans the Padres decided to throw a few away uniforms into the mix. Imagine opening up your bobblehead box to find a rare bobblehead that just a small handful of fans received. Good times indeed for that fan.

I’ve only actually seen this puzzle made by 7-Up one other time and it was in that glass encasing at Petco (as you enter on the 7th Ave entrance and walk up the stairs). I haven’t checked that out though in a couple seasons so I don’t know if it’s still there even. I found this at the swap meet a few years back and immediately swiped it up. There was no date on the box whatsoever so I had to do a little research to determine the year for this puzzle. I started by checking out the team baseball cards and came across this 1971 Topps card. Same picture just the swinging friar logo on the field was cropped out. Case closed. As you can see in the pictures above I actually even completed the puzzle and only 1 piece was missing. Not to bad considering the puzzle is 38 years old and has 500 pieces. If you notice it appears that they painted the field green and very badly painted a white baseball diamond on the original picture used to make the puzzle. My guess is when they took the picture it was football season so they did some “photo shop” for that time. Once again I’m not sure whether this was a giveaway or not during the season. Did they even have giveaways back then? The 1971 season is better off not being talked about…..

This is one of many 1984 Playoff/NL Champs/World Series t-shirts that I own. San Diego went wild during this time and all types of different shirts were made. Unfortunately we all know what happened to the Padres in that World Series.
