Here is something you don’t see given away in San Diego very often….a rain jacket. Yes we don’t have much need for these here, but this is still a cool item. The English Leather logo plastered on the back gives me the impression that this was some sort of giveaway. Judging by the Padres logo my guess is it was during the 1978 season since that was the only year they used the full name, San Diego Padres, on their uniforms. The 1978 Padres didn’t do so well finishing 4th in the NL West, although it was the first time the Padres ever finished .500 or above in a season. That’s right 9 straight sub .500 seasons to start out their career. Ouch. That year the Padres fielded 4 future Hall of Famers in Ozzie Smith, Dave Winfield, Rollie Fingers & Gaylord Perry plus the MLB All-Star game was held in San Diego that year as well.

Carl’s Jr. sold these back in 2002 to promote obesity. Yes obesity. You had to go to Carl’s Jr. every Saturday for 5 consecutive weeks and purchase a combo meal to buy a different bobblehead for $4.99. That’s a lot of burgers and if you’ve seen a Carl’s Jr. commercial you know that they don’t serve normal burgers. Week 1 was Ryan Klesko (w/the stand), Week 2 was Mark Kotsay, Week 3 was the facsimile autographed ball by the entire 2002 Padres, Week 4 was Phil Nevin and Week 5 was Trevor Hoffman. It’s actually a pretty good likeness to all the guys (down to Klesko’s sideburns) although they are made out of a plastic as opposed to the normal heavy duty ceramic. Another downer is they are wearing the awful blue & white Dodger-esque uniforms that I hated with a passion.

I made sure to show the back of the bank because it looks like the Friar was struck by a bat or something and split open his head. And why does he have apostrophe eyes like the Friar bobblehead? Plus why is he hiding the baseball behind his back with a huge smile on his face? If I turn my back on him is he going to throw the ball at me? Anyways the game went a little something like this…..Jake Peavy gives up lots of hits (10) yet only gives up 3 ER in 6 IP. Then Bryan Corey comes in and gives up 4 straight singles, Carlos Guevara relieves him and then gives up 2 straight singles and a walk. 4 runs in the top of the 7th=game over. Padres lose to the Mariners 9-2.
PS-How come almost everything I’ve posted for stadium giveaways has resulted in Padres losses??

This bobblehead creeps me out a bit. Yes it’s the Friar but it doesn’t even look like the Friar (the new or old version). It looks more like a Charles Schultz Peanuts version of the Friar. It was sold in 1999 and is made using a pretty solid ceramic that makes it probably the heaviest bobblehead I have.

I remember actually having this set back when I was a kid, but I’m not sure what ever happened to it. Then as luck would have it, I recently purchased a huge lot of Padres stuff and this was in it. I’m not 100% sure if this was a stadium giveaway or not, but judging by the Coca-Cola ads plastered all over it & a “Something special for your home from Alladinware” stamped on the bottom I’m thinking it was. Unfortunately there is no date anywhere on anything but looking at the Padres logo it had to be sometime between the 1985 season & the 1990 season. Pretty cool giveaway if you ask me.

After my meeting with Padres owner Jeff Moorad on Thursday I get the impression that this uniform might be going away soon. Therefore let’s give it a proper send off. I actually think it’s an OK jersey….probably my favorite of the 3 new ones but on the other hand our current color scheme is to close to the Milwaukee Brewers. Changing the away uniforms to gray, like he wants to do, isn’t going to make us stand out at all though. We’ll just be looking like the rest of the league who all pretty much use the gray for away uniforms. We need to bring back the brown!!!

And I wrote all about it over here (SDPads1). Go check it out. That is all.

Ladies and gentleman I give you the greatest Padre towel to date. It was given away sometime in 2005 but I’m not sure which game yet until I go through my totes and find the giveaway schedule for that year. Nice quality beach towel that has a little pocket sewn into the back side so it will all fold up nicely into the pouch. I use this thing like crazy when I go to the beach or the pool and throw other things in the pouch so I don’t need to bring a backpack or anything.

I just realized that I am quickly approaching 1,000 visitors here on this blog. Not to shabby for being a merch blog that has been around only a few short months. I’ll have to do something special here soon. Maybe a giveaway or something. Hmmm……..any ideas?

Well I guess the sting of Khalil being traded has worn off for most people by now so I guess I can safely post this without causing some people to tear up. Here is the wonderful sprawled out, diving catch, hair flowing (and perky butt according to jbox) Khalil Greene figurine that was given away at a game on April 8th, 2005. It is another one of the things that was done right by the Padres marketers back in the day…..oh how I yearn for those days once again. Nowadays all we get is breakfast. They got it right by not giving him a bobblehead but by capturing what most fans remember him the most for….making a spectacular diving catch….that and the expressionless face that they captured here so well. Funny how in that game Khalil made an error that essentially cost the Padres the game though. Brian Lawrence pitched solid going 7 innings, giving up only 2 ER, striking out 5 & walking only 2. Ryan Klesko hit a homer & Brian Giles actually hit a triple. But despite all that the errors by Khalil & Sean Burroughs in the 8th were to much to overcome. The Padres lost to the Pirates 3-2. This item has a COA #00001 of 44,000…..yet I highly doubt I got the first one so I assume they put that card with every figurine given away.
