Having played soccer since I was 6 years old I became fully aware of the “soccer-style scarf” years ago. Apparently with everyone Stateside being bit by the World Cup bug this year, they also became aware of the scarves and it in turn made this one of the hottest giveaways this season. I’ve spotted scarves on ebay that have been sold for over 40 bucks a piece. But here’s the thing….the game itself only drew 30,019 (11th highest drawing home attendance so far). It’s a very cool item and surprisingly very well made for a giveaway.
The game itself pitted the Padres vs the Mariners and Wade LeBlanc vs Cliff Lee. Adrian Gonzalez hit a 2 run shot in the first inning and finished the night 2 for 3. LeBlanc out dueled Lee by throwing 6 innings of 1 run ball. Oscar Salazar put the icing on the cake in the 8th inning with a 3 run homer. Padres win 7-1.

It’s been 5 months since my last post here so I thought I should re-introduce myself. Hi my name is SDPads1 and I’m a Padres memorabilia addict. Ok now that we’ve got that out of the way let’s post quite possibly the coolest thing in my collection (also one of the newest).
It’s a Padres CLIP ON TIE!!!
It’s the late 80′s colors and style so it’s obviously from sometime between 1985-1990. It’s 100% Polyester and was made by Corporate Textiles Inc. When I looked up this company it says that they make custom ties so it’s possible this is a custom creation and I have the only one. It’s also possible they had a contract with MLB and sold millions of these bad boys. Either way it’s pretty cool and I will be sporting it at games this season.

Dude this jacket is satin, looks like Elton John threw up on it & the seller is named bidoncoolstuff…..how could I NOT want this jacket?!?! Oh yeah it’s going for 200 bucks. Awesome.

Now I’m not a huge fan of floppy hats. Unless your a fisherman, albino or old man you probably shouldn’t be wearing them too. But I have to admit this one does look pretty cool. Now you’ve heard me rant and rave about how great the 2003 season was for stadium giveaways before but guess what, it ain’t over yet. This item was given away during the fabled (for giveaways….not the team) 2003 season. It is the wonderful brown and yellow that everyone loves and you can even reverse it and wear the Friar side if you want. It was given away on June 21st, 2003 against the Seattle Mariners. The game was a pitchers duel between Adam Eaton & Joel Pineiro in which not single run was scored from the bottom of the 2nd to the end of the game. Of the 6 overall runs scored in the game only 2 were scored off of hits (2 walks, 1 WP & 1 SF). The Padres lost yet again 4-2.

Here’s another thing I don’t own but I thought the guys at Gaslampball would enjoy, since everytime I turn around there is something new with the Pad Squad on there. It’s a Pad Squad jersey!! It’s either from a Pad Squad member or my guess it was purchased at the wonderful Padres Garage Sale that I love attending every year. Not a lot of bids yet on it and it’s still pretty cheap. Dex & Jbox get to bidding!!

Here is something you don’t see given away in San Diego very often….a rain jacket. Yes we don’t have much need for these here, but this is still a cool item. The English Leather logo plastered on the back gives me the impression that this was some sort of giveaway. Judging by the Padres logo my guess is it was during the 1978 season since that was the only year they used the full name, San Diego Padres, on their uniforms. The 1978 Padres didn’t do so well finishing 4th in the NL West, although it was the first time the Padres ever finished .500 or above in a season. That’s right 9 straight sub .500 seasons to start out their career. Ouch. That year the Padres fielded 4 future Hall of Famers in Ozzie Smith, Dave Winfield, Rollie Fingers & Gaylord Perry plus the MLB All-Star game was held in San Diego that year as well.

After my meeting with Padres owner Jeff Moorad on Thursday I get the impression that this uniform might be going away soon. Therefore let’s give it a proper send off. I actually think it’s an OK jersey….probably my favorite of the 3 new ones but on the other hand our current color scheme is to close to the Milwaukee Brewers. Changing the away uniforms to gray, like he wants to do, isn’t going to make us stand out at all though. We’ll just be looking like the rest of the league who all pretty much use the gray for away uniforms. We need to bring back the brown!!!

So I noticed on my stats page that I go from about 50+ viewers a day M-F to around 10 for the whole weekend. So for the small handful of people that will see this today I’m going to amaze you with this item. A hat. Blows your mind doesn’t it? I figured in keeping with the ’90′s flashback theme I’d complete the uni by showing the hat that they wore from 1991-2003.

Yes I have all 3 ’90′s Padre jerseys (among many others). Yes I know I have a problem and need to stop buying all this stuff. Yes I know it’s weird that I keep typing like I’m having a conversation with somebody. This jersey here was one of the go to jerseys for the Padres during this time. It seemed like I saw them in this uni more than the other 2 so it sticks out more to me as the jersey of the ’90′s. I’m not 100% sure on when they started using these so I searched the internet looking for pictures as well as looking at some old baseball cards. It appears that they first started using these in 1996 though.
PS-Upon further review the ugly Dodger-esque white unis were worn as far back as 1999. I didn’t realize they wore them for that long.
